Broadband VS. Downscan

The HDS broadband sonar has not been discussed much because of the DownScan showing so much better target separation. I collected great data at Oahe using the DownScan and traditional sonar on splitscreen to shows the qualities of both. I never realized the target separation the broadband sonar for fish in brush since I have not previously tested it in brush that held lots of fish. You will be amazed on the quality of screenshots I captured and how many fish there were. The catch rate matched the sonar at 20-50 fish/day.

This screen capture shows brush, boulders and fish separated easily. I was delighted to see how the broadband sonar separated the fish from the trees. Using the 2 screens together is the best way to understand DownScan and sonar. It is so good I may have less people at my future sonar classes!

This screenshot is great to show fish suspended by small trees.

The last screenshot shows something I never picked up before. I was using a 1 ½ oz Northland Rock Runner Slip Bouncer and a leech.

You can see the leech as a thin black line below the sinker and when I lift the sinker the leech goes up. The leech is small so doesn’t reflect the sound from the sonar well so it appears black and thin and sinker reflects sound well so is red-yellow and thicker.

You will also note the detailed maps I used on Oahe. I used the LakeMaster Dakota chip for finding fishing spots and for trolling contours. When trolling it is important to know the contours ahead so you can adjust before you get to a sharp turn.

I had so much fun at his tournament that it felt like a vacation instead of a job. I am looking forward to next year.
